Cottontown

The Historic Cottontown neighborhood was developed in the late 1890's and was one of the earliest planned suburbs. Bounded by Grace Avenue, Bull Street, Elmwood Avenue and Main Street, the neighborhood is remarkable as an intact example of one of Columbia’s earliest planned suburbs. It was listed as the Bellevue Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and is protected as an Architectural Conservation District by the City of Columbia in 2009. Cottontown was named for the warehouses used to store cotton in its boundaries in the late nineteenth century. Today, you will find a diversity of architectural styles, dating back to the early 1900's, including Craftsman Bungalows, Colonial and Tudor Revivals, Foursquares and cottages. Convenient to The Bull Street District, the revitalized North Main District, and just minutes from downtown and The Vista.
